Australian of the Year for 2011 is Simon McKeon, a high-flying investment banker who decided to work part-time to dedicate himself to social causes at home and abroad.
Mr McKeon, 55, succeeds psychiatrist Pat McGorry as Australian of the Year, in recognition of his many years of community service.
He beat the bookies' favourite Professor Larissa Behrendt, an Aboriginal lawyer and novelist.
