HMAS Bathurst, operating under the control of Border Protection Command, intercepted a suspected irregular entry vessel north-east of Christmas Island late last night.

Initial indications suggest there are 44 passengers and two crew on board.

The vessel was initially detected by a RAAF P3 surveillance aircraft, operating under the control of Border Protection Command.

The group will be transferred to Christmas Island where they will undergo security, identity and health checks and their reasons for travel will be established.

Police are being hailed as heroes after they prevented a 22-month-old boy from climbing over a balcony railing.
About 3.20pm yesterday (18 February), a woman ran into the front counter area saying that a baby appeared to be hanging from a third floor balcony of an Auburn unit block.
Four constables attached to Flemington Local Area Command ran from the station towards the Susan Street unit block.
Two officers remained at ground level while their colleagues ran to the third floor and forced their way into the unit. The child’s mother was unaware of the events unfolding around her.
Running onto the balcony, the police found the boy standing on a lounge chair with one leg on the balcony railing.
A male constable grabbed hold of the child and returned the boy to his mother.
It is anticipated the four officers will be commended for their actions.

The Camp of the Saints is a novel about population migration and the consequences thereof. In Bombay, India, the Dutch government announces a policy in which Indian babies will be adopted and raised in the Netherlands. The policy is soon reversed after the Dutch consulate is inundated with poverty-stricken parents eager to give up their infant children. An Indian "wise man" then rallies the masses to make a mass exodus to live in Europe. Most of the story centers on the French Riviera, where almost no one remains except for the military and a few civilians, including a retired professor who has been watching the huge fleet of run down freighters approaching the French coast. The story alternates between the French reaction to the mass immigration and the attitude of the immigrants. They have no desire to assimilate into French culture but want the plentiful food and water that are in short supply their native India. Although the novel focuses on France, it is not just the people of France that befall this fate. Near the end of the story the mayor of New York City is made to share Gracie Mansion with three families from Harlem, the Queen of England must agree to have her son marry a Pakistani woman, and only one drunken Soviet soldier stands in the way of thousands of Chinese people as they swarm into Siberia. The one holdout until the end of the novel is Switzerland, but by then international pressure isolating Switzerland as a rogue state for not opening its borders forces it to capitulate.

On 12 January 1943, the 18th Army's commander, General Adachi, ordered the evacuation of Sanananda. About 2,000 troops escaped by sea or on foot by the end of the battle. On 22 January, the 18th Brigade finished mopping-up actions and the Papuan campaign officially came to an end the following day.

"Well, I think one of the things we should be grateful for is the vision and foresight of an earlier generation of Queensland political leaders who built the Wivenhoe dam. Bad though this flood has been, disastrous though this flood has been, it could have been far worse but for the dam."

That’s right and this is where I think that we can be grateful for the foresight of the State Government back in the 1970s, putting the Wivenhoe Dam in place. Sure, the dam hasn’t entirely prevented a major flood but it is not nearly as bad as it could’ve been thanks to the foresight of an earlier government.

I think it’s pretty clear that the disaster that this flood has been, it would have been significantly worse without the Wivenhoe Dam and it’s a tribute to the foresight and the courage of an earlier generation of Queensland politicians that that dam was built.
So, I think we should be grateful to them for that and obviously in the weeks and months ahead it will be important to reflect on the experiences of these floods and to work out how we can best ensure that the community is safe-guarded as far as it can be against a recurrence.

Gerald "Gerry" Rafferty (16 April 1947 – 4 January 2011) was a Scottish singer and songwriter best known for his solo hits "Baker Street" and "Right Down the Line".
