The woman who found the talk for talkback
January 3, 2006
Joyce Moorhouse, who has died aged 90, worked at radio station 2GB for 50 years. Having begun as the office junior, she became the station's first and only telephonist, then ran the large switchboard for many years.
In 1980, Moorhouse got up from her switchboard, put on her coat and retired again. As she drove up the basement ramp to the street a fail-safe automatic door came down on the bonnet of her car, trapping her inside. It was almost as if the building was saying "don't go". It was a memorable exit after a memorable career.
Robin Voigt, Joy Moorhouse's niece.
